Graham: Not done saying farewell to Mac Court Comments

Mar14

It was about 10:20 Friday night. I had finished up my video interviews following the Crescent Valley-Mountain View 5A boys state semifinal game, and was outside Mac Court starting to walk toward my truck. Then I had another thought.

I knocked on one of the doors and a member of the security crew let me in.
“I just want to take a photo,” I said. “This may be the last time I ever see Mac Court.”

Graham: Merlin Olsen and my soup kitchen notes Comments

Mar12

I was saddened yesterday when I heard the news about Merlin Olsen’s death at age 69.

When I was in high school, Olsen was in the news a lot as a member of the Los Angeles Rams’ “Fearsome Foursome” defensive line. Later, he used his great voice as a football commentator and television actor. One of his roles was that of a priest in the early ’80s TV series “Father Murphy.”

Graham: 1985 West guard rooting for the 2010 Bulldogs Comments

Mar10

Tonight, West Albany will play Jefferson in 5A girls state quarterfinal game at Mac Court in Eugene.

It was 25 years ago this week that the Bulldogs opened play in the 1985 girls state tournament. In the quarterfinal, No. 4 West Albany beat No. 10 McMinnville 42-40 for its first-ever state tournament win.

Graham: Albany Hollywood Video store had good customer service Comments

Mar8

Last Wednesday I did some shopping, then decided to stop at Hollywood Video to pick up a movie.

I got about 10 feet from the door when I looked inside and saw that the place had been emptied out. Another guy walked right to the locked door before looking inside. “Wow!” he exclaimed.

“The Hurt Locker” deserved all six Oscars, including Best Picture, that it received tonight at the Academy Awards.

Graham: Now the Games are officially over Comments

Mar2

After two weeks of turning on the TV most nights to watch things like snowboard cross and ski jumping, I felt a bit lost last night.

Graham: Best way to keep up with the Games after falling asleep? Go to the Web Comments

Feb23

This is the first Olympics in which we’ve had timely and well-packaged Winter Games news and results on our Web sites.

I’ll turn on the Olympics in about 30 minutes, then fall asleep by 9:30. Tomorrow morning, I’ll log onto democratherald.com or gazettetimes.com, click on the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games icon and find out about everything I missed.

Graham: Nice to see you, spring! Come back soon Comments

Feb21

Kids and their parents occupied the Takena Park playground all afternoon today. People walked by the house in shorts. Two little guys rode their scooters back and forth on 10th Avenue and along the park sidewalk. I almost mowed over daffodils.

It’s Feb. 21 and spring is a month away, but it sure felt like it arrived this weekend.

Graham: Woods’ words sounded sincere Comments

Feb20

Tiger Woods’ press conference wasn’t a real a press conference. Media access was sharply restricted. There were no questions. It was scripted. It was rehearsed.
I heard a lot of that in the newsroom yesterday, and I agree with all of it. But the guy still got up and spoke for 13 1/2 minutes, explaining the hurt and the mess he had caused for his wife, his family and friends, his fans, his sponsors and business associates and the golf world.

Graham: A belated ovation for ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Comments

Feb14

Community theater doesn’t get better than what we saw on Friday night. The acting, the singing, the dancing, the costumes, the set and the orchestra were all top notch. … There was only one problem: We didn’t give the cast the standing ovation it deserved.
