I’ve never particularly liked coming back to work after a three-day holiday weekend. Last Tuesday was an exception.
I had been at the DH
office less than two hours when I headed to Mallard Creek Golf & RV Resort east of Lebanon. I’ve driven by the golf course a number of times since it opened in 2000, but not being a golfer I had never stopped there.
It was warm and sunny when I got there shortly after 9:30. DH photographer David Patton arrived a few minutes later. Our topic was tips about the preparation and execution for teeing off. It will be the
“Four Things Tuneup” for the June 18 edition of Oregon Outdoors. Mark Tunstill, Mallard’s Creek’s general manager and golf pro, provided the instructive tips — and a golf cart for David and I to follow him on holes 1 and 2. That marked another first: I had never been on a golf cart in my life, nor had David. I got to drive, and we enjoyed the ride.
While we were there, David and I were struck by Mallard Creek’s scenic setting off Bellinger Scale Road. In addition to the sound of electric golf carts and a nearby mower, we heard lots of birds and horses in the distance.
After David was finished with his photos and I had wrapped up a video, I
asked Mark about the wildlife he has encountered at Mallard Creek in the 10 years he has lived and worked there. He talks about it in the video below.
