It was seven months ago today that we woke up to the sounds of a 90-foot-tall pin oak crashing down in Takena Park about 50 yards from our house. The huge tree took out another smaller tree in its path, but otherwise did no

damage to the park. Within a few weeks, 5 cords of wood was hauled off by Gleaners for distribution to people in need of firewood.

Yesterday, two Japanese snowbells were planted where the two fallen trees stood and a third snowbell was planted just a few feet away. The trees are a living memorial to a friendly neighbor, Ken Luckenbill, who died in January at age 59.

Another neighbor, Donna Ashenfelter, graciously coordinated the effort with the Albany Parks Department and collected contributions for the purchase of the

trees and a bench that will come later.

Ken, a landscaper who lived around the corner, loved taking his daughter Gracie to play in park. Gracie, now 10, was among 20 of Ken’s loved ones, neighbors and friends on hand for the tree plantings Thursday.

It was a fitting tribute to a wonderful guy.
