The A’s and the Giants will play the second of their three-game cross-bay exhibition series tonight at O.co Coliseum in Oakland.

Before the 7:35 p.m. opening pitch, there will inevitably be a moment of silence for the victims of Monday’s shootings at Oikos University less than two miles away.

I’ve been doing my own moments of silence today — for the six students and school secretary who were killed and their families; for the small, unassuming Christian college I had never heard of until Monday; and for Oakland, a city that has seen too many senseless shootings and killings.

It was just two weeks ago yesterday that I rode the Air Bart shuttle bus from the Coliseum Bart Station to Oakland International Airport. It goes along

Hegenberger Road and crosses Edgewater Drive about four blocks south of Oikos University.

I’ll be on that shuttle again next month. Instead of burying my head in a book or listening to my iPod as I usually do, I plan to look north as the bus approaches and crosses Edgewater Drive — for another moment of silence.
